Hubble found that there is a relationship between how far away a galaxy is and how fast it is receding from us; therefore one can determine the distance to remote galaxies by measuring their redshift and determining from that how fast they are receding from us.  The trick here is in finding the correct constant of proportionality.. the Hubble constant.
